Frequently Asked Questions:
What is OCIA?
The process for one to become Catholic is called the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults, or simply OCIA. OCIA typically begins in August and continues until April.
Is OCIA a class?
There are many elements that form the OCIA process. Learning about Catholic teachings and practices in the classroom is apart of that process. We also address elements of prayer, parish life, and spiritual formation.
Do I have to become Catholic if I begin OCIA?
No. OCIA is meant to help individuals explore the possibility of becoming Catholic. Those who would like to simply inquire about the Catholic faith are welcome to attend. As we approach the final months of OCIA, there will be discussions about where you stand in your desire to become Catholic.
What if I am not baptized?
Attending OCIA is the best way to learn about baptism in the Catholic Church for adults who are not Christian or have never been baptized.
What if I was baptized in a non-Catholic Church?
Those who are baptized with water and "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" will not need to be baptized again. You will be welcomed into full communion with the Catholic Church and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
What if I was already baptized Catholic but haven't received all my sacraments?
OCIA is also available for baptized Catholics who have not yet received First Communion or Confirmation. Those under the age of 18 will typically enter into our religious education program.
Are classes only available in English?
No. We have two groups in our parish. One meets in English and the other in Spanish.
